NEW YORK (April 12, 2016) — At the Spencer Educational Foundation reception, the Foundation’s Board Vice President Marya J. Propis announced Temple University risk management student team as the winners of the Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge.  The team, comprised of four risk management students, competed against 21 other universities and delivered the award-winning risk management presentation in front industry leaders at RIMS 2016 Annual Conference & Exhibition in San Diego.

Members of the Temple University winning team included:
•    Andrew Donchez
•    Carolyn Murset
•    Sean Preis
•    Zilong Zhao
•    Academic Advisor: R.B. Drennan

“All of the students who took part in the Spencer-RIMS Risk Challenge are winners,” said Ron Davis, the newly elected Chair of the Spencer Educational Foundation.  “Each university team was prepared, smart and successfully delivered innovative risk management solutions for a very complex situation.  It is truly rewarding to see them have the opportunity to shine during this competition and validates the critical work we do to support tomorrow’s risk management professionals.”

“This competition reinforces that the risk management profession’s future is bright,” said RIMS CEO Mary Roth. “The Rising Risk Professional demographic of RIMS members continues to grow and their contributions and professional needs have directly influenced the resources and opportunities the Society delivers. We are so proud to be able to introduce these students to the energy and excitement of a RIMS Annual Conference and congratulate all of them for participating in the Challenge.”

The challenge began with 21 universities, three months ago, who were each presented with a risk management case-study. The teams developed solutions and eight of the teams were selected to attend RIMS ’16. During the conference, the field was narrowed to three and those finalists presented one last time in front of risk professionals at the conference.  This year’s Risk Management Challenge risk case-study was provided by Lego®.

Second place in this year’s Challenge was Florida State University and the third place team was Butler University.  The first place university received $4000, second $3,000 and third $2,000.
