NEW YORK (April 4, 2016) — On April 10th, risk professionals from around the world will participate in the 10th annual RIMS Community Service Day, an initiative that provides RIMS ’16 attendees with the opportunity to give back to the local community. This year, participants will work with Harmonium to paint, landscape and complete other low-maintenance projects for the schools that host the nonprofit’s Klassic Kids program.
Founded in 1975 to respond to Mira Mesa’s rapidly growing need for juvenile diversion services, Harmonium is a San Diego-based nonprofit that promotes the well-being of children, youth and adults through creative education, intervention and prevention services. The Klassic Kids program provides before and after school care and full-day care at designated sites on non-school days.
The group of volunteers will kick-off the event at a welcome breakfast at the San Diego Convention Center at 8:00 am and, at 9:00 am, will be transported to various sites.
A second Community Service Day project will be held on Tuesday, April 12th in the Exhibit Hall at the San Diego Convention Center. The second project will benefit Blessings in a Backpack, a local nonprofit that provides elementary school children who are on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year. Risk professionals will lend their support by assembling backpacks that will then be donated to local elementary schools.
“It is important for all of us to take a step back from our professional obligations and give back to our communities,” said RIMS CEO Mary Roth. “The city of San Diego has already done so much to accommodate the 10,000 RIMS ’16 participants at this year’s conference. We are proud to host our 10th RIMS Community Service Day and lend our support to local families and children in need.”
In 2007, RIMS was one of the first entities to host a large convention in post-Katrina New Orleans. RIMS first Community Service Day was initiated during that conference to support local families and rebuild infrastructure devastated by the natural disaster.
